The Indian Ocean island of Sri Lanka is home to an astounding array of natural and man-made wonders. On the coasts, golden beaches lure you to relax in year-round sunshine, while warm blue waters and vivid coral reefs create perfect conditions for watersports and diving. Inland, mountains, jungle, paddy fields and tea plantations provide ample opportunities for whitewater rafting, canoeing, walking and biking.

There are many ways to have fun in the sun and Sri Lanka’s wide array of watersport options at the south-west beach resorts provide plenty of pleasure. Take a short boat trip off-shore to dive over the coral reefs, grab a snorkel and mask to paddle your way through tropical fish, or take advantage of the strong breezes on the west coast from December to March to windsurf. If speed is more your thing then there are many jetski and waterski companies, particularly at Bentota, a two-hour drive south of Colombo, ready to fuel your adrenaline.

Hikkaduwa, Midigama and Polhenna Beaches in the south and west are good surfing beaches to explore. Boards and gear are available for hire locally. Do take local advice regarding strong currents and undertow in some areas.
