Welcome to Dondra Head
Dondra is a small town at the southern most point of Sri Lanka. Beyond the octagonal, 176ft tall lighthouse situated at Dondra Head there is nothing but sea all the way to the Antarctic.

For millennia it has been religion that has attracted people to Dondra. Here was situated an ancient and most venerated shrine to Vishnu, whose roof of gilt coppe shone far out to sea. This shrine, which

was originally constructed about the 7th century AD, was famous throughout the known world.

The pagoda was raised on vaulted arches, richly decorated and roofed with plates of gilded copper. So sacred a place was it that the habitation around it was called "Devi Nuwara" or City of the Gods.

Today there is practically nothing left architecturally, with which to piece together this golden era, for the Portuguese completely destroyed the temple.

Nevertheless, thousands of pilgrims still travel to the shrine annually for the famous Dondra Fair and Perehera, held in the month of Esala, July-August. This fair is a throwback to typical temple festivals of times long past.
